Steps to Take when your Phone is Stolen
As the population is increasing so also the criminal activity is also increasing especially in the area of phone theft. This
article is to serve as an eye-opener to what measure should be taken when your phone is being stolen. We are living in a digitalized world where almost
everything we do is tied our smartphones and internet below I would be listing
things that should be done
Action to Be Taken When You Experience Phone Theft
Block
your sim card: This is where people get is wrong immediately
you notice that your phone has been stolen, even before you post on social
media or report to any law enforcing agent, the first thing that is required
of you to do is to call the call centre of your sim carrier to immediately
block your sim card. As I said earlier on that we now live in a digitalized
world it is important to block your sim especially if you are not using sim
password. Gone are those days when your sim card is not that useful and can get
another immediately you lost one, now the narrative has changed because your
sim carries your personal information and for another criminal or fraudulent activity
especially the one that carries your BVN number which gives them the power to
collect loan on your behalf without your knowledge. So it is very important to
block your sim card
Change
your mail password: Most people don’t think to this
direction but it very important to change your email password why? your email
is linked to your mobile banking applications and all your social media which
give them an edge to take over any of your accounts. So changing your mail
password will log them out completely especially those that are using android phones.
Block
your ATM card: online transaction is now very
common and for we the lazy ones, when inputting our card details online we are
often asked to store the card details online for future purposes which is good
and bad at the same time. Once you have store your card details you don’t need
to input again which is common in Google Chrome Browser. So when always make sure
you communicate with your bank on either on the social media handle or via
email to notify them of what happened.
iCloudlock/iCloud Tracing: Have you ever wondered why apple
devices are super expensive? Ios is one of the most secured operating systems
and they also spend millions of dollars on their security features, apart from
their camera quality which is loved by many, their security is top notch not
compared with the android only if you go for the premium android devices not
the budget ones. iCloud is one of the dope features of apple devices ones you
have your iCloud activated and you are also running on the latest and supported
firmware or phone which they still support, you can trace and lock your phone
making it useless to anyone who has stolen the phone. Unlike other smartphones which can unlock and IMEI changes, it is like mission impossible on apple
device, that why most apple phones are returned to the owners.
Activity Tracking: if you activate you
google activity recorder you can easily log in to your Gmail account to check
where the phone is taken to but this is like a welcome development and don’t work
most of the time because most of the stolen phone would be wipe when stolen but
if you have the receipt then you can easily take it to the services centre for
them to track if with the IMEI
Report to the Police: it is very
important to report to the police officers in case your phone is being used to
carry out any criminal activity, you can easily use your police report to back yourself
up and prevent stories that touch the heart.
Social
media notification: don’t forget to also post on any of your social media
handle
